T.y Holland - I wasn't there, To Obama

I wasn’t there to see the dogs let loose br Or the people bombarded, and told what’s the use. br I never saw them give their speech of dreams br Or hear the words personally, by any means. br Never stood on the front lines br Saying we shall overcome but, was one of a million people br Who saw this moment come. br Screaming yes we can! And yes we will! br We were the ones who made our predecessors dreams come real. br With the coldest days, it was warm as could be br This day was marked with joyful empathy. br When he arrived so proud, so tall br He hardly spoke a word of one br But together were all, and if not cared for br Then together well fall. br No I didn’t get to see the great Martin Luther King br Or stand on the lines, br No I wasn’t there to look br “X” in the eyes br Or even sit next to Rosa as she was denied. br But I like to believe now, that they all are smiling br Saying, maybe to each other, how’s that for timing? br No I wasn’t a real civil rights activist br In the times of times br But I’m just twenty and that was some time ago. br However I did get to see br Most of their dreams to come. br A black man named president br Leading the throne. br I was there first hand br To make a chance to believe br To cast a vote or bleed. br And I watched first hand br As he made us believe, “yes we can” br And together were one, br I was there to see him win br Not by a little but a great margin. br Then I was there, in the warm blistering cold br To see him solemnly swear to be the best man, anywhere. br And as the world watched br I could only think. br By any means br Is this what they had in mind br When they spoke of having a dream.br br T.
