Gert Strydom - When I was a child

Gert Strydom - When I was a child

When I was a child br I saw fireflies, br fly passing secretly at night. br br The world was full of wonderful things br and there were trees br with bird nests and eggs br of white and pink and blue br and with spots on them. br br I could shoot a true shot with my kettie br and the blue fishing rod br took carp, blue kurper, yellowfish br and catfish from streams. br br Doves or fish fillets br from glowing wood embers, br tasted delicious br and the world was a great place. br br At the marsh plovers jumped up and down br and like wounded birds, as if with a broken wing br tried to entice you away from their nests br br Aloe and protea bushes were all over the kopjes br and prickly pear, wild peach, mispil and stamvrugte br were everywhere on the ridges. br br The world of a child faded away with time. br But when I went back as a adult; br a highway runs right through the hillocks br and there are houses where there was marsh br and the streams are full of rubbish and litter br and I see how progress has destroyed nature.
