Qassim Haddad - Poets

Poets draw nature before it prefigures itself br and they invent br and build a hut abandoned by a gang of thugs. br They sing sometimes br and they form a road so water can take the shape of a river. br They instill in mud the memory of the trees. br A bird discovers its colors in the phrases of a poem, br and picks its rare name. br br When poets leave sleep behind br the young thugs begin their rampage. br They romp a little br and they throng as if nature is ambushing them. br They storm and they thunder. br And their limbs begin to thin as if the seasons br were all about to start, br as if childhood selected its shapes suddenly, br and eyes br gaze only at the perseverance of nature. br And the young thugs commit their sins br sip by sip br the way poems clash against the triumph of time. br Creatures offer gifts br and take their tempting shapes br as if a tongue made creation. br And people, still startled by their inception, br face the thin ice adorning their mirrors to see br what the poets have done to our feeble dreams. br Poetry maligns speech br and the young thugs commit forgivable sins br the way an infant scratches a breast then weeps to br it the way a text breaks its intentions. br Then the apple of love descends br enamoring a woman with a lost lover, br the way the wolf divulges the myth of the bloody shirt br and the innocent brothers confess their crime br and nature forgives a careless creator then praises him.
