Leonard Dabydeen - I Don't Know

I don't know br if tomorrow will come br with my head hanging in shame br as I recoil br from home-grown Socialism. br br But those who pride themselves br as Comrades of a Revolution br trying to construct a path br with pebbles of Marx br and Lenin br and Kim ll Sung br they're sadly wooing br our people br into deeper self-destruction. br br As new vistas unfold br in the illimitable horizon br these comrades br shackle the nation br in entrapment br they fill their coffers br with the toil br and sweat br and blood br of our people. br br Along the way br the path behind br becomes broken br and disjointed br leaving the nation br parched with hunger br there is no bread br to eat br the strength of our people br drained br like the juice br from a ripe mango br squeezed to the last drop. br br Fear of our people's survival br enhancing in the sleepless hours br of the night br gun-toting bandits br roam the streets br knocking down doors br raping sisters br raping mothers br killing fathers and sons br maddened by the impotence br of their weakened victims. br br When such Socialism br can breed maggots br in the minds of Comrades br and let a nation weep br while they sleep br I pray in earnest br not to be a part br of its machinations. br br (This poem is surfacing from my br archive - written on June16,1984. br It was not so long ago THE JONESTOWN MASSACRE br took place) .
