Thomas Donnelly - Halcyon (The Sweetest Year)

Thomas Donnelly - Halcyon (The Sweetest Year)

When I was young, a boy of ten and three br I knew of love with naive clarity br My love burned bright, but dimmed as each day passed br It turned to ash. It burned out naturally. br br A child's heart is fickle, underlined br With good intentions. Likewise unconfined br Were thoughts which said 'You love her not, move on! ' br And so I left the ones I loved behind. br br Yet when I sat and pondered in disgrace br I saw a girl I knew, a pretty face br Possessed of subtle-soft regality br Her gentle smiles filled up my empty space. br br She was my little secret, tucked away br Inside my dreams, a magnolia fay br Whose presence stoked, not quenched, affection's fire br My love only burned brighter every day. br br And so began our romances sublime br So long ago when love was in its prime br Before a Demon tore us both apart br But that's a story for another time. br br So when the lonely winds of life do blow br I think of her, the girl of long ago br Who loved me in that year of burning heat.
