Josephine Collett - Boy On A Bridge

Josephine Collett - Boy On A Bridge

All my life I have known br The shape of a track through sand and rock and stone br to the edge of pools where dark shadows br fill the water's face with reflected sky and willows br I have chased fish and hummed songs br Here where my childhood belongs br in the shallow streams and billabongs br br Here I watched the current drag a paper boat br and lay belly-down on the timbered bridge br as it passed beneath, onward to I knew not where br my little ship of hope in the world afloat br and the chill of night descended and the curlew's sad note br br Where does the water come from, where br does it go? br What is this ache in my soul as I see br it rushing below? br Am I not more than a dropp in a stream? br And all my desires, are they yet just a dream? br For the world is grown larger than a place br on a track, in a town, on a map, or my fingers br turning a globe, turning br And I will forsake the quiet pools br and follow the tumbling waters onward br with a blood pulse and a heart's yearningbr br Josephine Collettbr br
