Mohabeer Beeharry - The begging bowl

Mohabeer Beeharry - The begging bowl

Why can't I ever have peace? br Or be happy? br I have given away almost all I have. br Sometimes when this heart grows weak br And my conscience strong, br And I cannot sustain its repeated demand, br I am tempted even to give away br What I have left, locked away. br Will it satisfy the insatiable hunger br Of those who are always pestering my conscience. br Will it give me peace? br Will it make me happy? br Shall I see a world br Where man has not stooped so low? br With nothing left to feed myself, br Having given everything away br I will have to fit a begging bowl br Out for myself. br Who is genuine, br And who is fake br The line is very thin between. br In this complicated world the old conscience br Is dying an untimely death! br God’s names and hypocrisy have become close comrades in business. br And charity another name for living shamelessly off another’s sweat and labour.
