Konstantin Mikhailovich Simonov - If God In His Almighty Power

If God in his almighty Power br Called me to heaven when I died br And I was asked, at Heaven's gate, br What I should choose to take inside, br br I should not want, in paradise, br A boring girl of honest worth. br I'd take with me the very same br With whom I'd shared this sinful earth: br br The wild and wilful one, the one br Who gives me (for a time) her love, br She who tormented me below br Would keep me from ennui above. br br There must be very few who'd take br Such desperate souls to share their bliss. br The saints would cast a furtive glance br And say 'Has Heaven come to this?' br br I'd take with me the distances - br The agony of separation, br To call to mind when we're apart br The way you kissed me at the station. br br I'd have to take the dangers too, br To keep you anxious, true and wise, br So that no coward should enjoy br The liquid brilliance of your eyes. br br I'd take to heaven a faithful friend br To drink a toast when all is well. br And I should take the enemy br To fight with at the gates of hell. br br Love and boredom and pity I'd take, br Even the nightingale in the wood - br Every tiny fraction of life br We live on earth, I'd take - if I could. br br Even death, if that could be, br I should not leave behind below. br All that is here our lot on earth br I'd choose to take with me - and so br br God, in astonishment, would curse br The worldly loyalties of men, br And very soon, without a doubt, br Would put me back on earth again.
