http://www.hauteroute.org Stage 3 from Courchevel to Alpe d'Huez, the marathon stage, with a 5 out of 5 difficulty rating, was the stage many of the riders most feared and dreaded, and they were right to be apprehensive. Many of the 600 riders had never taken on anything like today before, let alone after two hard days of racing: "I was really scared," said Pascale Legrand of Canada. "I've never done 4,700m of climbing before." The legendary Col de la Madeleine and Col du Glandon tested them to the limit combining 4,700m of ascent under intense heat, faced with the final very demanding climb to Alpe d'Huez. "It was a long day in the saddle, nearly 6 hours for me," said Stephen Blake from South Africa. "The Glandon was brutal."
