Heritage walk to monument Bhuli Bhatiyari ka Mahal

Among the lesser known monuments in Delhi is Bhuli Bhatiyari Mahal. The palace with a park is situated on Ridge road near Panchkuian road. The park, maintained by Delhi Development Authority or DDA, takes you to the palace.br br The old architectural structure is surrounded by wild shrubs and neglected trees. There is a board near the entrance which announces that the monument is protected under the Archaeological Survey of India or ASI. It also comes under the aegis of INTACH as a heritage project.br br Bhuli Bhatiyari Mahal was built by Feroz Shah Tughlaq in the 14th century as a hunting lodge or a 'shikargarh'. Some historians maintain that it was named after the bhuri or the fair inn-keeper at the lodge. It is believed that Feroz Shah Tughlaq fell in love with the inn-keeper and the palace was later named after her as Bhuri Bhatiyari which got distorted to Bhuli Bhatiyari.br br According to another legend, a woman from the Bhatiyara family had lost her way in the jungle and was rescued by Tughlaq who then built this mahal or palace for her. And so the name Bhuli (lost) Bhatiyari. However, Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan, an Indian educator and politician during the 19th century, believed that the mahal was named after its occupant, Bu Ali Bhatt, and it later got distorted to its present name.br br In terms of architectural design, Bhuli Bhatiyari has an arched entrance as a gateway that takes you inside a compound. Bhuli Bhatiyari wild shrubs, DelhiFrom here you can see the exterior walls of the rectangular palace, located at about 20 feet from the gateway. The surrounding areas have not been maintained well and you can see wild vegetation all around. Stairs from outside take you to the top of the palace from where you get a good view of the city.br br The monument is in a dilapidated state and there isn't much to explore. No beautiful carvings, no spacious rooms, no engravings that reveal something about the past. They have all perhaps perished with time or maybe never existed. However, what you do notice is the peace and tranquility. You can see the city life of Delhi from some distance and choose not to be a part of it for some moments. It's like watching a muted video on Delhi, what with the sounds from the city hardly audible. And so in spite of the ruins, there is an understated appeal here, more to experience than to see.br br Source: br This footage is part of the professionally-shot broadcast stock footage archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd., the largest collection of HD imagery from South Asia.
