Hip-hop icon Suge Knight is recovering in a hospital after being shot at this West Hollywood nightclub, early Sunday morning.

Two others were also shot.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) LAPD LIEUTENANT, JOHN CORINA, SAYING:

"Apparently some altercation took place inside. Somebody pulled out a gun and started shooting. A person by the name of Suge Knight ended up getting shot. He's taken to the hospital."

The 1Oak club was hosting a pre-MTV Video Music Awards party, and police say it was packed with hundreds of people when the shots were fired.

TMZ reports that Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records, was in intensive care after undergoing surgery.

It's not the first time Knight has been the victim of a shooting.

At a Miami party in 2005 he was shot in the leg, also before the MTV music awards.
