Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday exhibited ‘mango diplomacy’ by dispatching a box of Pakistani mangos as a gift for the Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, in a bid to diffuse tension, Dunya News reported.
According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office (FO), Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif sent boxes of Pakistani mangoes to Indian Prime Minister along with heads of 21 countries.
Although the season of the ‘king of fruits’ is about to end, Pakistan’s distinctive Chonsa and Sindhrri mangoes were sent to sweeten the bitterness.
Foreign Office told that the mangoes were sent to Modi through the proper channel.
It merits mentioning here that the scheduled meeting between Pakistani and Indian foreign secretaries was cancelled because of the meeting between Pakistani High Commissioner Abdul Basit and Kashmiri leaders as India had termed the move as interference in India’s internal affairs.
Sharif’s mango diplomacy is being termed an attempt to diffuse that tension. Sources said that mangoes were also sent to Indian president Paranab Mukherji, vice president Hamid Ansari and Foreign Minister Sushma Suraj.
It’s also worth noting that United Nations (UN) General Assembly session is scheduled to take place in September and Indo-Pak leaders are expected to meet there.
