Bombay Talkies production, Ziddi was released in 1948 and this movie launched the career of Dev Anand as a lead hero and Kishore Kumar as a singer in Hindi films. Ziddi is the first film in which the playback singers Kishore Kumar (Kishore-da) and the nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar recorded their first duet song – “Ye kaun aya re”. Other ever green songs sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar in this film are “Marne ki duayen kyon mangu”, “Chandra re ja re ja re, piya se sandesa mora kahiyo jaa”. Directed by Shaheed Latif, the film Ziddi was based on the story of Ismat Chughtai. The film also had Kamini Kaushal and Pran in lead roles. Khemchand Prakash took care of the music of the film.br br The movie starts with a poor old nani who worked as a maid in Chote Thakur's Haveli. She is now very ill and waiting for Chote Thakur to come. Chote Thakur could not come but sends his nephew,Puran (Dev Anand) to nani and ask him to bring nani and her granddaughter, Asha (Kamini Kaushal) to their home. But nani dies and before dying, he gives the responsibility of Asha's marriage and well-being to Puran. Chote Thakur (Chacha) loved Asha's mother but could not marry her as she was a maid's daughter and his father was against this. She was forcibly married to an uneducated guy and eventually she is dead. Now, Asha resembles her mother. Chote Thakur doesn't want Asha to meet the same fate as her mother. He wants Puran to marry Asha. Puran and Asha also starts loving each other. Chachi and all other members of the family are completely against of all this. So, Puran and Asha plan to run away.
