Joseph James Breunig 3rd - Poem: Field Mouse

An unsuspecting, little, field mouse br committed a simple mistake one day; br it unwittingly entered my rented house, br not knowing my cats wanted to play. br br My feline buddies, Hijinx and Mischief, br decided to live up to their spirited names; br sadly, the field mouse was offered no relief – br for the boys had a live prize to claim. br br By its tail, my cats had live entertainment; br although they’re allowed to have their fun, br from this one deed, my cats will never repent; br for they again had disobeyed - rule number one. br br Since their English is not very good, br their one restriction they tend to forget; br so it’s not surprising they misunderstood, br my rule of: “Pets are not allowed to have pets! ” br br So now it was time for me to intervene; br performing an unexpected “Animal Rescue”, br I now became a mouse catching machine br and watched him scamper away from my view. br br A new retrieval approach, I had to posit; br with the boys closely monitoring my work, br I quickly chased him into a nearby closet, br hoping my cats wouldn’t impatiently go berserk. br br Removing items from the closet’s floor, br and contending with this fuzzy foreigner, br I eyed the boys – to keep him from being gored. br Eventually, I trapped him in the corner. br br By the time I reached him, he had died – br traumatized until his last heart’s rush. br Unlike my curious pets, I became teary eyed, br as this escapade ended… with a toilet’s flush.
