John Ciardi - Why Nobody Pets The Lion At The Zoo

John Ciardi - Why Nobody Pets The Lion At The Zoo

The morning that the world began br The Lion growled a growl at Man. br br And I suspect the Lion might br (If he'd been closer) have tried a bite. br br I think that's as it ought to be br And not as it was taught to me. br br I think the Lion has a right br To growl a growl and bite a bite. br br And if the Lion bothered Adam, br He should have growled right back at 'im. br br The way to treat a Lion right br Is growl for growl and bite for bite. br br True, the Lion is better fit br For biting than for being bit. br br But if you look him in the eye br You'll find the Lion's rather shy. br br He really wants someone to pet him. br The trouble is: his teeth won't let him. br br He has a heart of gold beneath br But the Lion just can't trust his teeth.
