Edgar Albert Guest - When Mother Sleeps

Edgar Albert Guest - When Mother Sleeps

When mother sleeps, a slamming door br Disturbs her not at all; br A man might walk across the floor br Or wander through the hall br A pistol shot outside would not br Drive slumber from her eyes— br But she is always on the spot br The moment baby cries. br br The thunder crash she would not hear, br Nor shouting in the street; br A barking dog, however near, br Of sleep can never cheat br Dear mother, but I've noticed this br To my profound surprise: br That always wide-awake she is br The moment baby cries. br br However weary she may be, br Though wrapped in slumber deep, br Somehow it always seems to me br Her vigil she will keep. br Sound sleeper that she is, I take br It in her heart there lies br A love that causes her to wake br The moment baby cries.
