Edgar Albert Guest - A Patriotic Wish

Edgar Albert Guest - A Patriotic Wish

I'd like to be the sort of man br the flag could boast about; br I'd like to be the sort of man br it cannot live without; br I'd like to be the type of man br That really is American: br The head-erect and shoulders-square, br Clean-minded fellow, just and fair, br That all men picture when they see br The glorious banner of the free. br br I'd like to be the sort of man br the flag now typifies, br The kind of man we really want br the flag to symbolize; br The loyal brother to a trust, br The big, unselfish soul and just, br The friend of every man oppressed, br The strong support of all that's best, br The sturdy chap the banner's meant, br Where'er it flies, to represent. br br I'd like to be the sort of man br the flag's supposed to mean, br The man that all in fancy see br wherever it is seen, br The chap that's ready for a fight br Whenever there's a wrong to right, br The friend in every time of need, br The doer of the daring deed, br The clean and generous handed man br That is a real American.
