Edgar Albert Guest - Things That Haven't Been Done Before

The things that haven't been done before, br Those are the things to try; br Columbus dreamed of an unknown shore br At the rim of the far-flung sky, br And his heart was bold and his faith was strong br As he ventured in dangers new, br And he paid no heed to the jeering throng br Or the fears of the doubting crew. br br The many will follow the beaten track br With guideposts on the way, br They live and have lived for ages back br With a chart for every day. br Someone has told them it's safe to go br On the road he has traveled o'er, br And all that they ever strive to know br Are the things that were known before. br br A few strike out, without map or chart, br Where never a man has been, br From the beaten paths they draw apart br To see what no man has seen. br There are deeds they hunger alone to do; br Though battered and bruised and sore, br They blaze the path for the many, who br Do nothing not done before.
