Edgar Albert Guest - Bribed

Edgar Albert Guest - Bribed

I know that what I did was wrong; br I should have sent you far away. br You tempted me, and I'm not strong; br I tried but couldn't answer nay. br I should have packed you off to bed; br Instead I let you stay awhile, br And mother scolded when I said br That you had bribed me with your smile. br And yesterday I gave to you br Another piece of chocolate cake, br Some red-ripe watermelon, too, br And that gave you the stomach ache. br And that was after I'd been told br You'd had enough, you saucy miss; br You tempted me, you five-year-old, br And bribed me with a hug and kiss. br And mother said I mustn't get br You roller skates, yet here they are; br I haven't dared to tell her yet; br Some time, she says, I'll go too far. br I gave my word I wouldn't buy br These things, for accidents she fears; br Now I must tell, when questioned why, br Just how you bribed me with your tears. br I've tried so hard to do the right, br Yet I have broken every vow. br I let you do, most every night, br The things your mother won't allow. br I know that I am doing wrong, br Yet all my sense of honor flies, br The moment that you come along br And bribe me with those wondrous eyes.
