While it was raining heavily outside, br Two children in shabby, tattered dress br Stormed into our glass roofed patio br And at the door, for mercy did pause br br They said they were out to buy empty cans br To make a living and support their family br The only work they could do at their age br And it was not their intent to dilly dally br br I was in no mood to entertain them br As my hands with pending works were tight br A week's laundry and some shopping to do br But was rather indisposed to send them outright br br As I looked onto their starved faces br I felt a hard tug deep from within br After a moment's thought, when I invited them in br In innocent mirth, their eyes did spin br br For them as I brewed two cups of coffee br And gave some homemade snacks to munch br Their little faces bloomed in joy br As if savouring a favourite fruit punch.
