African Poems - Lenrie Peter (We Have Come Home)

We have come home br From the bloodless wars br With sunken hearts br Our booths full of pride- br From the true massacre of the soul br When we have asked br ‘What does it cost br To be loved and left alone' br br We have come home br Bringing the pledge br Which is written in rainbow colours br Across the sky-for burial br But is not the time br To lay wreaths br For yesterday's crimes, br Night threatens br Time dissolves br And there is no acquaintance br With tomorrow br br br The gurgling drums br Echo the stars br The forest howls br And between the trees br The dark sun appears. br br We have come home br When the dawn falters br Singing songs of other lands br The death march br Violating our ears br Knowing all our loves and tears br Determined by the spinning coin br br We have come home br To the green foothills br To drink from the cup br Of warm and mellow birdsong br ‘To the hot beaches br Where the boats go out to sea br Threshing the ocean's harvest br And the hovering, plunging br Gliding gulls shower kisses on the waves br br We have come home br Where through the lighting flash br And the thundering rain br The famine the drought, br The sudden spirit br Lingers on the road br Supporting the tortured remnants of the flesh br That spirit which asks no favour of the world br But to have dignity.
