Edgar Albert Guest - His Philosophy

Edgar Albert Guest - His Philosophy

JIM had a quaint philosophy, br 'It ain't fer you, it's jes' fer me,' br He used to say. 'I don't p'tend br T' force it onto foe or friend; br I don't advise or recommend br This way or that fer him nor you, br Or try t' tell you what t' do; br But I jes' take myself aside br An' teach him tricks he's never tried. br br 'I kinder take myself in hand br An' try t' make him understand br That he must do a full day's work, br An' ain't got time t' loaf an' shirk; br An' when he gets a load of care, br His shoulders are the ones t' bear br That burden, not his neighbors or br Some friend he might go running for. br br 'I try t' teach myself t' smile, br T' whistle every little while, br T' take whatever comes his way br As his just portion of th' day; br An' not complain an' fume an' frown, br An' vow th' world is runnin' down br An' ragged at th' heel becoz br Things ain't as pleasant as they was. br br 'Fer I've got all that I can do br T' keep myself in line; that's true. br It ain't fer me t' stand up now br An' try t' tell my neighbors how br They ought t' live, an' what t' do, br T' hold up all their faults t' view. br Reformin' others may be fine, br But somehow that ain't in my line. br br 'Yes, I've my own philosophy, br But it 's intended jes' fer me; br It's made t' keep myself in line, br T make me never show a sign br Of fear or cowardice when things br Go wrong or untold sorrow stings, br An' that is all that I can do — br You'll have t' say what's best fer you.
