Joseph Skipsey - Slighted

AH me! my heart is like to break, br The envied rose upon my cheek, br The blood red rose is cold and bleak br Now Robin slighteth me. br br Alas! a shadow lone and pale br I all unheard my lot bewail; br He listens to another's tale, br He hath no ear for me. br br Could he but look upon my grief br Would he not try to bring relief? br I feel my days below are brief, br So deep the wound I dree. br br I trail about I know not how; br I like a thief slink down the row, br For well behind my back I know br The rest all laugh at me. br br The rest to one the other wink br Whenever down the row I slink; br Their hearts are filled with glee to think br How he my bane should be. br br The very bairns have caught their words, br As notes are caught by mocking birds, br By jibes are rent my bosom chords, br And grief is killing me. br br I feel my days on earth are brief; br Ah! could he look upon my grief br Would he not try to bring relief? br Would he not kinder be? br br I dreamed last night to me he came; br A blush was on his cheek for shame; br He took my hand, he breathed my name; br He gave such looks to me— br br Such looks? No sun will rise to set br When I forget those looks, forget br Those star-bright eyes, those eyes of jet br That wiled my heart from me.
