Akhtar Jawad - A Word, a Relationship Translation of Khalida Bano Ali's poem Ek Lafz Ek Rishta

I was incomplete, br Oh dears! You completed me, br Just for a word, br I agreed to be born, br As a woman! br Otherwise, br I would have prayed, br Kindly not to make, br Me a woman! br Your world, br Will not let the woman live, br You yourself would be watching, br In your world, br A woman, br Is a commodity of pleasure, br Sometimes she is stolen, br Sometimes robbed, br Not only in the markets, br Sold even at home! br I saw her trembling, br I saw her falling, br I saw her standing, br Again after falling, br I saw her burnt alive, br I saw her melting in acid, br I saw her stoned to death, br Publicly! br I saw her bricked, br Alive in a wall, br Even today blood, br Is bursting out of the earth, br From a place, br She was buried alive, br Guilty of being a woman, br Today before her birth, br The killers, br Force her to sleep, br In the valley of death, br What could I do? br I had to be completed, br Just to listen, br To this word, br I was born, br My children! br You call me Mom! br br (In a western society one may not believe but all this happened and still happening in our society)br br Akhtar Jawadbr br
