Colin Ian Jeffery - AIRGUNNER

Wellington bomber's engines roar br There is a stench of burning oil br As in the darkness the heavy plane rises. br There is no moon or stars only inky darkness br And an icy cold chilling the soul. br br Flying over the white cliffs of Dover br He fires his guns - - testing them br Ready for German fighters br Swooping like hawks against the bomber br Darting from the darkness guns blazing. br br Over Holland they join other bombers br Flying in formation towards Germany br Searchlights seeking for them br With ack-ack shells colouring the night br Trying to bring the bombers down. br br Fighters, like angry hornets, sweep in br As the bombers reach Berlin br Where path-finders have lit-up the target br And below all seems a sea of fire br Hitler's punishment for London's blitz. br br Bomb-aimer takes control of the plane br Guiding the pilot over the target br Where he presses the plunger br And bombs drop screaming as they go br Exploding the factory making tanks. br br The bomber makes two runs br Turns for home, caught in searchlight glare br Illuminated for fighters and gunners br Too slow it tries to climb beyond the light br And is swept by machine gun fire. br br The burning bomber reaches England br Pilot dying, crew bloody and afraid br Crash lands on its airfield br The rear-gunner is pulled from his turret br Weeping, he has survived another mission.
