With her calf she dives br Into the darkness a mile below the waves br Where the great squid abides br Ferocious Goliath monarch of oceans deep. br br Singing a lilting lullaby to her calf br In the darkness she swims in playful mood br And can for an hour remain down in the deep br Swimming side by side with her son. br br Largest of the toothed whales br She comes to the surface br Spouting water through her blowhole br Smacking her great tail on the waves. br br The Japanese harpooner takes aim br And the deadly bolt plunges home br The explosive charge detonates br Mortally wounded she calls to her calf. br br Hauled up dying by her tail br Against the side of the whaling ship br In agony she dangles head in the sea br Bleeding slowly to death. br br Her calf calls out in anguish br Following the ship for hours br But there is no lilting answering lullaby br Only blood in the water.
