Israeli forces continued to clash with Palestinians in Jerusalem's old city on Wednesday (November 5), drawing harsh condemnation from the Palestinian president's religious affairs advisor who warned of an escalation and a "religious war".

Earlier, Israeli security forces entered the al-Aqsa compound, a sacred plaza known to Jews as the Temple Mount and Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, and clashed with Palestinian stone throwers.

Israeli military police ran through the old city's cobblestone alleyways as Palestinians gathered to protest in yet another day of unrest in Jerusalem which has seen violent confrontations in recent weeks.

Explosions echoed through the alleys as police threw several stun grenades to disperse the gathering and paramedics rushed to treat wounded amid billowing smoke.
