Hans Ostrom - Emily Dickinson and Elvis Presley in Heaven

They call each other `E.' Elvis picks br wildflowers near the river and brings br them to Emily. She explains half-rhymes to him. br br In heaven Emily wears her hair long, sports br Levis and western blouses with rhinestones. br Elvis is lean again, wears baggy trousers br br and T-shirts, a letterman's jacket from Tupelo High. br They take long walks and often hold hands. br She prefers they remain just friends. Forever. br br Emily's poems now contain naugahyde, Cadillacs, br Electricity, jets, TV, Little Richard and Richard br Nixon. The rock-a-billy rhythm makes her smile. br br Elvis likes himself with style. This afternoon br he will play guitar and sing 'I Taste A Liquor br Never Brewed' to the tune of 'Love Me Tender.' br br Emily will clap and harmonize. Alone br in their cabins later, they'll listen to the river br and nap. They will not think of Amherst br br or Las Vegas. They know why God made them br roommates. It's because America br was their hometown. It's because br br God is a thing without br feathers. It's because br God wears blue suede shoes.
