Terry Donovan - THE LAST GOODBYE

Terry Donovan - THE LAST GOODBYE

I looked at my wife, my wife looked at me, br We both looked at the nurse br Who spoke to us with tear-filled eyes: br 'Her condition is getting worse'. br br 'We've done all that is possible br To try and save the day br But our best wasn't good enough - br Now we can only pray'. br br And so we prayed - what else to do? br And I was far from sure. br I spoke to God more earnestly br Than I'd ever done before. br br The God that I'd rejected br And I only hoped somehow br That he would overlook my past br And listen to me now. br br We stayed with her till morning came. br The doctor said, 'It's best br For everyone right now br If you go home and rest'. br br We kissed her thin and sallow cheek, br We spoke, but no reply. br A question hovered in the air - br Was this our last goodbye? br br For her, tomorrow never came. br But we prayed once again, br Sad but glad that God had heard br And rid her off her pain. br br He's taken her to heaven, br He's taught us to be brave br And smile with pride when daily we br Put flowers on her grave.
