Rupert Brooke - Dawn

Rupert Brooke - Dawn

Opposite me two Germans snore and sweat. br Through sullen swirling gloom we jolt and roar. br We have been here for ever: even yet br A dim watch tells two hours, two aeons, more. br The windows are tight-shut and slimy-wet br With a night's foetor. There are two hours more; br Two hours to dawn and Milan; two hours yet. br Opposite me two Germans sweat and snore. . . . br br One of them wakes, and spits, and sleeps again. br The darkness shivers. A wan light through the rain br Strikes on our faces, drawn and white. Somewhere br A new day sprawls; and, inside, the foul air br Is chill, and damp, and fouler than before. . . . br Opposite me two Germans sweat and snore.
