Katherine Mansfield - Now I am a Plant, a Weed...

Now I am a plant, a weed, br Bending and swinging br On a rocky ledge; br And now I am a long brown grass br Fluttering like flame; br I am a reed; br An old shell singing br For ever the same; br A drift of sedge; br A white, white stone; br A bone; br Until I pass br Into sand again, br And spin and blow br To and fro, to and fro, br On the edge of the sea br In the fading light-- br For the light fades. br br But if you were to come you would not say: br "She is not waiting here for me; br She has forgotten." Have we not in play br Disguised ourselves as weed and stones and grass br While the strange ships did pass br Gently, gravely, leaving a curl of foam br That uncurled softly about our island home, br Bubbles of foam that glittered on the stone br Like rainbows? Look, darling! No, they are gone. br And the white sails have melted into the sailing sky...
