Katherine Mansfield - Opposites

The Half-Soled-Boots-With-Toecaps-Child br Walked out into the street br And splashed in all the pubbles till br She had such shocking feet br br The Patent-Leather-Slipper-Child br Stayed quietly in the house br And sat upon the fender stool br As still as any mouse. br br The Half-Soled-Boots-With-Toecaps-Child br Her hands were black as ink; br She would come running through the house br And begging for a drink. br br The Patent-Leather-Slipper-Child br Her hands were white as snow; br She did not like to play around, br She only liked to sew. br br The Half-Soled-Boots-With-Toecaps-Child br Lost hair ribbons galore; br She dropped them on the garden walks, br She dropped them on the floor. br br The Patent-Leather-Slipper-Child br O thoughtful little girl! br She liked to walk quite soberly, br It kept her hair in curl. br br The Half-Soled-Boots-With-Toecaps-Child br When she was glad or proud br Just flung her arms round Mother's neck br And kissed her very loud. br br The Patent-Leather-Slipper-Child br Was shocked at such a sight, br She only offered you her cheek br At morning and at night. br br O Half-Soled-Boots-With-Toecaps-Child br Your happy laughing face br Does like a scented Summer rose br Make sweet the dullest place. br br O Patent-Leather-Slipper-Child br My dear, I'm well content br To have my daughter in my arms, br And not an ornament.
