Elizabeth Barrett Browning - On A Portrait Of Wordsworth By B. R. Haydon

Elizabeth Barrett Browning - On A Portrait Of Wordsworth By B. R. Haydon

Wordsworth upon Helvellyn ! Let the cloud br Ebb audibly along the mountain-wind, br Then break against the rock, and show behind br The lowland valleys floating up to crowd br The sense with beauty. He with forehead bowed br And humble-lidded eyes, as one inclined br Before the sovran thought of his own mind, br And very meek with inspirations proud, br Takes here his rightful place as poet-priest br By the high altar, singing prayer and prayer br br To the higher Heavens. A noble vision free br Our Haydon's hand has flung out from the mist: br No portrait this, with Academic air ! br This is the poet and his poetry.
