William Allingham - Robin Redbreast

William Allingham - Robin Redbreast

Good-bye, good-bye to Summer! br For Summer's nearly done; br The garden smiling faintly, br Cool breezes in the sun; br Our Thrushes now are silent, br Our Swallows flown away, -- br But Robin's here, in coat of brown, br With ruddy breast-knot gay. br Robin, Robin Redbreast, br O Robin dear! br Robin singing sweetly br In the falling of the year. br br Bright yellow, red, and orange, br The leaves come down in hosts; br The trees are Indian Princes, br But soon they'll turn to Ghosts; br The scanty pears and apples br Hang russet on the bough, br It's Autumn, Autumn, Autumn late, br 'Twill soon be Winter now. br Robin, Robin Redbreast, br O Robin dear! br And welaway! my Robin, br For pinching times are near. br br The fireside for the Cricket, br The wheatstack for the Mouse, br When trembling night-winds whistle br And moan all round the house; br The frosty ways like iron, br The branches plumed with snow, -- br Alas! in Winter, dead and dark, br Where can poor Robin go? br Robin, Robin Redbreast, br O Robin dear! br And a crumb of bread for Robin, br His little heart to cheer.
