Emily Jane Brontë - How Clear She Shines

How clear she shines! How quietly br I lie beneath her guardian light; br While heaven and earth are whispering me, br " Tomorrow, wake, but, dream to-night." br Yes, Fancy, come, my Fairy love! br These throbbing temples softly kiss; br And bend my lonely couch above br And bring me rest, and bring me bliss. br br The world is going; dark world, adieu! br Grim world, conceal thee till the day; br The heart, thou canst not all subdue, br Must still resist, if thou delay! br br Thy love I will not, will not share; br Thy hatred only wakes a smile; br Thy griefs may wound - thy wrongs may tear, br But, oh, thy lies shall ne'er beguile! br While gazing on the stars that glow br Above me, in that stormless sea, br I long to hope that all the woe br Creation knows, is held in thee! br br And, this shall be my dream to-night; br I'll think the heaven of glorious spheres br Is rolling on its course of light br In endless bliss, through endless years; br I'll think, there's not one world above, br Far as these straining eyes can see, br Where Wisdom ever laughed at Love, br Or Virtue crouched to Infamy; br br Where, writhing 'neath the strokes of Fate, br The mangled wretch was forced to smile; br To match his patience 'gainst her hate, br His heart rebellious all the while.
