Anne Brontë - An Orphan's Lament

Anne Brontë - An Orphan's Lament

She's gone -- and twice the summer's sun br Has gilt Regina's towers, br And melted wild Angora's snows, br And warmed Exina's bowers. br The flowerets twice on hill and dale br Have bloomed and died away, br And twice the rustling forest leaves br Have fallen to decay, br br And thrice stern winter's icy hand br Has checked the river's flow, br And three times o'er the mountains thrown br His spotless robe of snow. br br Two summers springs and autumns sad br Three winters cold and grey -- br And is it then so long ago br That wild November day! br br They say such tears as children weep br Will soon be dried away, br That childish grief however strong br Is only for a day, br br And parted friends how dear soe'er br Will soon forgotten be; br It may be so with other hearts, br It is not thus with me. br br My mother, thou wilt weep no more br For thou art gone above, br But can I ever cease to mourn br Thy good and fervent love? br br While that was mine the world to me br Was sunshine bright and fair; br No feeling rose within my heart br But thou couldst read it there. br br And thou couldst feel for all my joys br And all my childish cares br And never weary of my play br Or scorn my foolish fears. br br Beneath thy sweet maternal smile br All pain and sorrow fled, br And even the very tears were sweet br Upon thy bosom shed. br br Thy loss can never be repaired; br I shall not know again br While life remains, the peaceful joy br That filled my spirit then. br br Where shall I find a heart like thine br While life remains to me, br And where shall I bestow the love br I ever bore for thee? br br A.H.
