Joyce Kilmer - Folly

Joyce Kilmer - Folly

(For A. K. K.) br br What distant mountains thrill and glow br Beneath our Lady Folly's tread? br Why has she left us, wise in woe, br Shrewd, practical, uncomforted? br We cannot love or dream or sing, br We are too cynical to pray, br There is no joy in anything br Since Lady Folly went away. br br Many a knight and gentle maid, br Whose glory shines from years gone by, br Through ignorance was unafraid br And as a fool knew how to die. br Saint Folly rode beside Jehanne br And broke the ranks of Hell with her, br And Folly's smile shone brightly on br Christ's plaything, Brother Juniper. br br Our minds are troubled and defiled br By study in a weary school. br O for the folly of the child! br The ready courage of the fool! br Lord, crush our knowledge utterly br And make us humble, simple men; br And cleansed of wisdom, let us see br Our Lady Folly's face again.
