Anne Brontë - In Memory of a Happy Day in February

Blessed be Thou for all the joy br My soul has felt today! br O let its memory stay with me br And never pass away! br I was alone, for those I loved br Were far away from me, br The sun shone on the withered grass, br The wind blew fresh and free. br br Was it the smile of early spring br That made my bosom glow? br 'Twas sweet, but neither sun nor wind br Could raise my spirit so. br br Was it some feeling of delight, br All vague and undefined? br No, 'twas a rapture deep and strong, br Expanding in the mind! br br Was it a sanguine view of life br And all its transient bliss- br A hope of bright prosperity? br O no, it was not this! br br It was a glimpse of truth divine br Unto my spirit given br Illumined by a ray of light br That shone direct from heaven! br br I felt there was a God on high br By whom all things were made. br I saw His wisdom and his power br In all his works displayed. br br But most throughout the moral world br I saw his glory shine; br I saw His wisdom infinite, br His mercy all divine. br br Deep secrets of his providence br In darkness long concealed br Were brought to my delighted eyes br And graciously revealed. br br But while I wondered and adored br His wisdom so divine, br I did not tremble at his power, br I felt that God was mine. br br I knew that my Redeemer lived, br I did not fear to die; br Full sure that I should rise again br To immortality. br br I longed to view that bliss divine br Which eye hath never seen, br To see the glories of his face br Without the veil between.
