Matthew Arnold - Hayeswater

Matthew Arnold - Hayeswater

A region desolate and wild. br Black, chafing water: and afloat, br And lonely as a truant child br In a waste wood, a single boat: br No mast, no sails are set thereon; br It moves, but never moveth on: br And welters like a human thing br Amid the wild waves weltering. br br Behind, a buried vale doth sleep, br Far down the torrent cleaves its way: br In front the dumb rock rises steep, br A fretted wall of blue and grey; br Of shooting cliff and crumbled stone br With many a wild weed overgrown: br All else, black water: and afloat, br One rood from shore, that single boat.
