Thomas Hardy - Amabel

Thomas Hardy - Amabel

I MARKED her ruined hues, br Her custom-straitened views, br And asked, "Can there indwell br My Amabel?" br br I looked upon her gown, br Once rose, now earthen brown; br The change was like the knell br Of Amabel. br br Her step's mechanic ways br Had lost the life of May's; br Her laugh, once sweet in swell, br Spoilt Amabel. br br I mused: "Who sings the strain br I sang ere warmth did wane? br Who thinks its numbers spell br His Amabel?"-- br br Knowing that, though Love cease, br Love's race shows undecrease; br All find in dorp or dell br An Amabel.
