Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - Witnesses, The

In Ocean's wide domains, br Half buried in the sands, br Lie skeletons in chains, br With shackled feet and hands. br br Beyond the fall of dews, br Deeper than plummet lies, br Float ships, with all their crews, br No more to sink nor rise. br br There the black Slave-ship swims, br Freighted with human forms, br Whose fettered, fleshless limbs br Are not the sport of storms. br br These are the bones of Slaves; br They gleam from the abyss; br They cry, from yawning waves, br "We are the Witnesses!" br br Within Earth's wide domains br Are markets for men's lives; br Their necks are galled with chains, br Their wrists are cramped with gyves.
