Sidney Lanier - Our Hills

Sidney Lanier - Our Hills

Dear Mother-Earth br Of Titan birth, br Yon hills are your large breasts, and often I br Have climbed to their top-nipples, fain and dry br To drink my mother's-milk so near the sky. br br O ye hill-stains, br Red, for all rains! br The blood that made you has all bled for us, br The hearts that paid you are all dead for us, br The trees that shade you groan with lead, for us! br br And O, hill-sides, br Like giants' brides br Ye sleep in ravine-rumpled draperies, br And weep your springs in tearful memories br Of days that stained your robes with stains like these! br br Sleep on, ye hills! br Weep on, ye rills! br The stainers have decreed the stains shall stay. br They chain the hands might wash the stains away. br They wait with cold hearts till we "rue the day". br br O Mother-Earth br Of Titan birth, br Thy mother's-milk is curdled with aloe. br -- Like hills, Men, lift calm heads through any woe, br And weep, but bow not an inch, for any foe! br br Thou Sorrow-height br We climb by night, br Thou hast no hell-deep chasm save Disgrace.
