George Meredith - Modern Love I: By This He Knew She Wept

By this he knew she wept with waking eyes: br That, at his hand's light quiver by her head, br The strange low sobs that shook their common bed br Were called into her with a sharp surprise, br And strangled mute, like little gaping snakes, br Dreadfully venomous to him. She lay br Stone-still, and the long darkness flowed away br With muffled pulses. Then, as midnight makes br Her giant heart of Memory and Tears br Drink the pale drug of silence, and so beat br Sleep's heavy measure, they from head to feet br Were moveless, looking through their dead black years, br By vain regret scrawled over the blank wall. br Like sculptured effigies they might be seen br Upon their marriage-tomb, the sword between; br Each wishing for the sword that severs all.
