Rudyard Kipling - The Outlaws

Rudyard Kipling - The Outlaws

i1914i br br br Through learned and laborious years br They set themselves to find br Fresh terrors and undreamed-of fears br To heap upon mankind. br br ALl that they drew from Heaven above br Or digged from earth beneath, br They laid into their treasure-trove br And arsenals of death: br br While, for well-weighed advantage sake, br Ruler and ruled alike br Built up the faith they meant to break br When the fit hour should strike. br br They traded with the careless earth, br And good return it gave: br They plotted by their neighbour's hearth br The means to make him slave. br br When all was ready to their hand br They loosed their hidden sword, br And utterly laid waste a land br Their oath was pledged to guard. br br Coldly they went about to raise br To life and make more dread br Abominations of old days, br That men believed were dead. br br They paid the price to reach their goal br Across a world in flame; br But their own hate slew their own soul br Before that victory came.
