Vachel Lindsay - On the Garden Wall

Vachel Lindsay - On the Garden Wall

Oh, once I walked a garden br In dreams. 'Twas yellow grass. br And many orange-trees grew there br In sand as white as glass. br The curving, wide wall-border br Was marble, like the snow. br I walked that wall a fairy-prince br And, pacing quaint and slow, br Beside me were my pages, br Two giant, friendly birds. br Half swan they were, half peacock. br They spake in courtier-words. br Their inner wings a charriot, br Their outer wings for flight, br They lifted me from dreamland. br We bade those trees good-night. br Swiftly above the stars we rode. br I looked below me soon. br The white-walled garden I had ruled br Was one lone flower--the moon.
