Rosanna Eleanor Leprohon - The Bride of a Year

She stands in front of her mirror br With bright and joyous air, br Smoothes out with a skilful hand br Her waves of golden hair; br But the tell-tale roses on her cheek, br So changing yet so bright, br And downcast, earnest eye betray br New thoughts are hers to-night. br br Then say what is the fairy spell br Around her beauty thrown, br Lending a new and softer charm br To every look and tone? br It is the hidden consciousness -- br The blissful, joyous thought br That she, at length, hath wholly won br The heart she long had sought. br br To-morrow is her bridal day, br That day of hopes and fears, br Of partings from beloved friends, br Of sunshine and of tears: br To-morrow will she say the words, br Those words whose import deep br Will fix her future lot in life -- br Well might she pause and weep! br br Yet, only once, a passing cloud br Rests on her girlish brow, br Her dark eye gleameth restlessly -- br She's thinking of her vow. br But quick as light and fleecy clouds br Flit o'er a summer sky, br The shadow passeth from her brow, br The trouble from her eye.
