Thomas Moore - Fairest! Put on a While

Fairest! put on a while br These pinions of light I bring thee, br And o'er thy own green isle br In fancy let me wing thee. br Never did Ariel's plume, br At golden sunset, hover br O'er scenes so full of bloom br As I shall waft thee over. br br Fields, where the Spring delays br And fearlessly meets the ardour br Of the warm Summer's gaze, br With only her tears to guard her; br Rocks, through myrtle boughs br In grace majestic frowning, br Like some bold warrior's brows br That Love hath just been crowning. br br Islets, so freshly fair, br That never hath bird come nigh them, br But, from his course through air, br He hath been won down by them; -- br Types, sweet maid, of thee, br Whose look, whose blush inviting, br Never did Love yet see br From heaven, without alighting. br br Lakes, where the pearl lies hid, br And caves, where the gem is sleeping, br Bright as the tears thy lid br Lets fall in lonely weepin. br Glens, where Ocean comes, br To 'scape the wild wind's rancour; br And harbours, worthiest homes br Where Freedom's fleet can anchor. br br Then, if, while scenes so grand, br So beautiful, shine before thee, br Pride for thy own dear land br Should haply be stealing o'er thee, br Oh, let grief come first, br O'er pride itself victorious -- br Thinking how man hath curst br What Heaven hath made so glorious.
