Czeslaw Milosz - Statue of a Couple

Czeslaw Milosz - Statue of a Couple

Your hand, my wonder, is now icy cold. br The purest light of the celestial dome br has burned me through. And now we are br as two still plams lying in darlmess, br as two black banks of a frozen stream br in the chasm of the world. br br Our hair combed back is carved in wood, br the moon walks over our ebony shoulders. br A distant cockcrow, the night goes by, silent. br Rich is the rime of love, withered the dowry. br br Where are you, living in what depths of time, br love, stepping down into what waters, br now, when the frost of our voiceless lips br does not fend off the divine fires? br br In a forest of clouds, of fcam, and of silver br we live, caressing lands under our br And we are wielding the might of a dark scepter br to earn oblivion. br br My love, your breast cut through by a clinel br knows nothing anymore of what it was. br Of clouds at dawn, of angers at daybreak, br of shallows in springtime it has no remembrance. br br And you have led me, as once an angel led br Tobias, onto the rusty mashes of Lombardy. br But a day came when a sign frightened you, br a stinma of golden measure. br br With a scream, with inunobile fear in your thin hands br you fell into a pit that ashes lie over, br where neither northern firs nor Italian yews br could protect our andent bed of lovers. br br What was it. what is it, what will it be br we filled the world with our cry and calling. br The dawn is back, the red moon set, br do we know now? In a heavy ship br br A helmman comes, throws a silken rope br and binds w tightly to eaah other, br then he pours on friends, once enemies, br a handful of snow.
