George Herbert - Peace

George Herbert - Peace

Sweet Peace, where dost thou dwell? I humbly crave, br Let me once know. br I sought thee in a secret cave, br And ask'd, if Peace were there, br A hollow wind did seem to answer, No: br Go seek elsewhere. br br I did; and going did a rainbow note: br Surely, thought I, br This is the lace of Peace's coat: br I will search out the matter. br But while I looked the clouds immediately br Did break and scatter. br br Then went I to a garden and did spy br A gallant flower, br The crown-imperial: Sure, said I, br Peace at the root must dwell. br But when I digged, I saw a worm devour br What showed so well. br br At length I met a rev'rend good old man; br Whom when for Peace br br I did demand, he thus began: br There was a Prince of old br At Salem dwelt, who lived with good increase br Of flock and fold. br br He sweetly lived; yet sweetness did not save br His life from foes. br But after death out of his grave br There sprang twelve stalks of wheat; br Which many wond'ring at, got some of those br To plant and set. br br It prospered strangely, and did soon disperse br Through all the earth: br For they that taste it do rehearse br That virtue lies therein; br A secret virtue, bringing peace and mirth br By flight of sin. br br Take of this grain, which in my garden grows, br And grows for you; br Make bread of it: and that repose br And peace, which ev'ry where br With so much earnestness you do pursue, br Is only there.
