Sylvia Plath - Polly's Tree

Sylvia Plath - Polly's Tree

A dream tree, Polly's tree: br a thicket of sticks, br each speckled twig br br ending in a thin-paned br leaf unlike any br other on it br br or in a ghost flower br flat as paper and br of a color br br vaporish as frost-breath, br more finical than br any silk fan br br the Chinese ladies use br to stir robin's egg br air. The silver - br br haired seed of the milkweed br comes to roost there, frail br as the halo br br rayed round a candle flame, br a will-o'-the-wisp br nimbus, or puff br br of cloud-stuff, tipping her br queer candelabrum. br Palely lit by br br snuff-ruffed dandelions, br white daisy wheels and br a tiger faced br br pansy, it glows. O it's br no family tree, br Polly's tree, nor br br a tree of heaven, though br it marry quartz-flake, br feather and rose. br br It sprang from her pillow br whole as a cobweb br ribbed like a hand, br br a dream tree. Polly's tree br wears a valentine br arc of tear-pearled br br bleeding hearts on its sleeve br and, crowning it, one br blue larkspur star.
